Pieter Mogge: An Influential Regent

Pieter Mogge was an influential 18th-century figure, born in Zeeland. He studied law in Leiden and Utrecht and began his career as councilor and mayor of Zierikzee. His political influence grew when he was appointed to the Generality Chamber in The Hague in 1737, followed by a seat in the States General from 1741. As a regent, he was praised for his competence. Mogge was also a wealthy man, mainly through inheritances, and became lord of Renesse, Moermond, and Dreischor.

Plans for a University

Upon his death, it was revealed that Pieter Mogge had left a considerable fortune with the intention of founding a university in Zierikzee. Unfortunately, various complications prevented this noble plan from being realized. Nevertheless, his legacy in the region endures.

Recognition and Tribute

In memory of Mogge, a street in Zierikzee was named after him. In addition, a bronze statue of him was erected, alongside statues of other famous Zeelanders such as Jacob Cats and Pieter Zeeman. This tribute serves as a lasting reminder of his influence and contributions to the region.
