Bewaer Schole Burgh-Haamstede

From history The building on Weststraat in Burgh-Haamstede was built in 1873/1874 as a nursery school (formerly known as a kindergarten). The Civil Poor Administration commissioned the construction. Until 1956, hundreds of nursery school children from Burgh and Haamstede attended school here. After that, it became a gymnasium, post office, rehearsal room for the band, and mortuary.

To present Since 1975, the Bewaerschole has been an exhibition space with exhibitions at the (inter)national level. Attention is paid to reflection and imagination. Societal debate is also welcomed.

The Stichting Monumenten Schouwen-Duiveland / Stichting Renesse currently manage the building. Thanks to financial support from these organizations, the outdated annex, as well as the kitchen and pantry, were renovated in 2021. This renovation created a second (small) exhibition space.
