Discover the rich history of Zierikzee as an important fish market. For centuries, fishing was the engine behind the prosperity of the city. In the mid-17th century, the fleet consisted of nearly 100 ships, and the caught fish was brought ashore and sold in Zierikzee. From there, the catch was traded to places such as Brabant and Flanders. Unfortunately, the fishing fleet shrank during the 18th century due to competition from cities along the mouth of the Meuse river. Fortunately, the city still has a bustling fish market. In 1804, the fish market was relocated to the courtyard of the Sint Jacobsgilde, where it remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
