Brusea: visserijmuseum en oudheidkamer
The residents of the village of Bruinisse have been earning their income from mussel and oyster fishing since 1467. In Brusea, a museum in the village, you can learn more about fishing throughout the years. How were mussels caught over the centuries? And how did mussel fishermen work and live in the past? This museum will answer these questions. There is also a focus on modern mussel fishing and the challenges of today.
On the upper floor, you will find old tools and ship carpentry equipment, as well as historical documents of heroic stories. Think of the spectacular sea rescue, the storm disaster of 1911 that destroyed many ships in the port of Bruinisse. There is also a film playing here that shows how mussels are caught and processed.

In the adjacent 18th-century monumental building, you will find a fisherman's house. The styled rooms, traditional costumes, glassware, and pottery give you an insight into the life and work of a mussel fisherman and his family.
There is also plenty to see and experience for children. For example, you can bake Zeeuwse bolus (a sweet pastry) in the kitchen, organize a children's party, and there are scavenger hunts for different age groups.
TIP: Recently, an audio tour has been introduced that tells more about the big and small stories of the past, present, and future based on the objects in the museum.
