Noordgouwe
Since January first 2021, Noordgouwe proudly holds the status of a protected village landscape. And rightly so. This peaceful and charming village on Schouwen Duiveland has a unique structure and atmosphere that takes you back in time.
At the centre stands the iconic Driekoningen Church, located on elevated ground and surrounded by a circular moat that once offered protection. The combination of the moat and the church gives Noordgouwe its distinctive circular layout, which is rare in Zeeland.
Interestingly, Noordgouwe is one of the younger villages on the island. Until the fourteenth century, the Gouwe tidal stream still flowed where the village now stands. Only after the land was reclaimed could the village be built. The name Noordgouwe is a lasting reminder of the water that once shaped this area.
