Jacob Cats: Poet and Statesman
Jacob Cats, born on November 10, 1577, in Brouwershaven, was an influential Dutch poet and statesman. Known for his Calvinist, moralistic poems, often offering wise life lessons, as in his famous work Sinne- en Minnebeelden (1672), he remains one of the most quoted literary figures in the Netherlands. Besides his literary career, Cats was also active in politics, playing a key role as Grand Pensionary.

Remembered in Statue
In Brouwershaven, his birthplace, two statues of Jacob Cats can be found. The original, worn by time, was restored and moved to the St. Nicholas Church. A bronze replica was placed on the Markt. Both statues serve as a lasting tribute to his life and work. The Renesse Foundation, dedicated to preserving cultural heritage on Schouwen-Duiveland, funded the restoration and commissioned the bronze statue.

Commemoration and Legacy
The restored statue of Cats is regarded not just as a monument, but also as a symbol of the preservation of Schouwen-Duiveland’s cultural heritage. The unveiling of the replica on the Markt was a festive occasion for the people of Brouwershaven, celebrating the city’s rich history and honoring its famous son.
