Gasthuiskerk

The Gasthuiskerk is a unique combination of a former trade fair and a Dutch Reformed Church from the 14th century, located on the Havenplein in Zierikzee. Originally, the hospice served as accommodation for poor foreigners and the sick. Over time, the hospice also accommodated the mentally ill. The chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, had its own pastor. After the Reformation, the chapel and church building were transferred to the Walloon Reformed congregation. The Walloon community, in which preaching was done in French, later received a building on Poststraat.

Today, the Gasthuiskerk is a popular attraction and various events and meetings are held in the building. The church has a rich history and is definitely worth a visit.

In 1653, the facade was decorated with the coat of arms of the city of Zierikzee, held by a merman and a mermaid.
