Standbeeld Adriaan Fondse
Adriaan Fondse (1888–1945)
Adriaan Fondse was born in Zonnemaire and later lived in Oosterland, where he worked as a constable and chief sergeant of the Marechaussee. He was known as just, law-abiding, and outspokenly anti-German.
Resistance and Betrayal
During the war, he openly spoke out against the occupiers. In 1943, he was betrayed by a fellow villager and arrested for allegedly inciting others to strike. Through Kamp Vught and Sachsenhausen, he ended up in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he died in March 1945.
Forever Remembered
