Standbeeld Kaatje en Kootje

Kaatje (1910–1990) & Kootje (1912–2009) van de Zande
The sisters Kaatje and Kootje grew up in Burgh and together ran the famous hotel-restaurant Westenschouwens Welvarenin the heart of Westenschouwen for their entire lives. They were known for their cooking skills and warm hospitality — even Princess Irene loved dining there.

From Inn to Institution
The family building, once a town hall and inn, was converted into a guesthouse by the Van de Zande family. The sisters learned to cook from their mother, and with the help of cookbooks, they created a restaurant that became known nationwide.

A Hospitable Icon of Westenschouwen
From the 1930s onward, tourism grew and Westenschouwens Welvaren became the beating heart of the village. Guests returned year after year, some even arriving by horse and carriage from Zierikzee. The sisters cooked with love and care — and you could taste it.
