Aart van Zuijen (1892–1974)
Aart van Zuijen came from a farming family in the Westhoek. He was praised for his kind heart and was always there for his fellow villagers. In difficult times, he handed out potatoes, visited new mothers with gifts, and treated children to fairground coins.
A True Villager at Heart
Aart served 36 years on the Burgh municipal council (including Westenschouwen and Burghsluis) and held many board positions. He was active in the Agricultural Society, the Orange Association, the Cooperative Farmers’ Bank, and various festival committees.
Football Pioneer
Van Zuijen contributed to the rise of football in the region. He secured better fields, supported clubs, and fostered community spirit. After the flood disaster, the sports park in Burgh was named after him.

His statue in Burgh honors his tireless dedication to the community. The bronze sculpture was created by artist Vincent Krans from Ouwerkerk and donated by the Renesse Foundation.
