Visit the beautiful nature reserve of Dijkwater and experience the rich history of its water past. Admire the former dike reinforcements and creek courses that date back to a time before the 1953 North Sea flood. Dijkwater was a significant water area before the disaster, with four small ports that transported agricultural products to cities. After the flood, the good soil was reclaimed, and the poor soil was designated as a nature reserve.

The area is home to a variety of nature, including forests, reeds, open brackish water with an island, old dikes, and calcareous grasslands. Here you will find rare plants such as the Harlequin, orchids, and sea-green sedge. On the island, gray geese and ducks breed, while in the shallow water, spoonbills and great egrets search for food. There are also birds of prey, geese, and even roe deer to be found.

Take a 4.5-kilometer walk through this unique nature reserve and admire the birds quietly at the viewing wall. Excursions are regularly organized, and more information can be found on the website of Staatsbosbeheer. On the south side of Dijkwater, near Sirjansland, are flower dikes that are a colorful sight in the spring. In the village of Sirjansland itself, you will find a small forest with a bat cellar and a frog pond.
