Lokaal Westenschouwen

For years on end, Westenschouwen has had a small yet fine neighborhood supermarket. In 2020, Martijn Thijssen took over from the previous owner. "Originally, I'm from Rotterdam. After traveling first, my wife and I temporarily settled here. The store came our way through word of mouth. We didn't know the area, but now that we've stayed, we love it."

Martijn had been in retail for a long time before this. That experience comes in handy now. "The great thing is that I'm doing this for myself. Here, I can try out everything and tailor it according to my ideas." When Martijn took over the store, he completely renovated and rebuilt it. "I went into it with new energy, and what you put in, you get back. We work with a small team, everything is very personal. I think that's how you can make a difference."

In the store, you can find pretty much everything you need, although the selection is slightly more limited compared to a large supermarket. "I work a lot with local suppliers. Like Zeeuwsche Zoute from Bruinisse and coffee from Zeeuwse Branding," Martijn explains. In addition to daily groceries and fresh sandwiches, you can also rent bikes at Lokaal Westenschouwen. There's a choice of regular ladies' and men's bikes, e-bikes, and a cargo bike. Handy to have such a store around the corner!
