Elisabeth Hetherington en Asako Ueda

Since moving to the Netherlands, Canadian soprano Elisabeth Hetherington has established herself as one of the most remarkable artists of her generation. She naturally performs both early and contemporary repertoire in concert halls and festivals throughout Europe. Elisabeth receives rave reviews, praising both her impressive stage presence and her clear, pure soprano voice. One of the prizes she has won is the Dutch Music Prize 2024.

In 1610, the 19-year-old Robert Dowland, son of the famous composer John Dowland, compiled A Musical Banquet, one of the most influential collections for understanding the Elizabethan lute song repertoire. Inspired by his father's musical legacy, Robert put together this musical "tasting," featuring works from all over Europe. While foreign influences – particularly French, Spanish, and Italian – were already known to English audiences, this collection reflected the growing taste for continental styles. Nevertheless, Dowland chose to publish the pieces in lute tablature, as a nod to English musical tradition and resistance to the Italian basso continuo.

In collaboration with lutenist Asako Ueda, Elisabeth presents her own musical tasting, inspired by Dowland's Musical Banquet. Using original pieces from the collection as a basis, she interweaves works by related composers, or artists she would like to invite to her own musical table:
