The 61-kilometer bike route takes you along places with memories of the 1953 North Sea flood disaster. During the storm night of January 31 to February 1, 1953, the dikes broke and significant parts of Zeeland, South Holland, and Brabant were flooded. The consequences on Schouwen-Duiveland are also unimaginable. In total, the disaster cost the lives of 1835 people.

This Watersnoodroute also passes the caissons in Ouwerkerk. In November 1953, the last dike breach at Ouwerkerk was closed with the help of caissons. The Watersnoodmuseum is now located in these caissons and offers a place to remember and commemorate. The museum shows you how the disaster unfolded through impressive photos, films, and eyewitness reports, and what happened after that night. There is also special attention paid to the future of water.

The route also takes you along the Weg door het Dijkwater nature reserve, an area that was created after the North Sea flood disaster. Be sure to also visit the old ring village of Dreischor where you can find many monuments. Tip: Make a stop at the Museumcafé of Museumboerderij Dreischor where you can also recharge your e-bikes.
