Voordelta

Zonnemaire

Zonnemaire is a small village with around 755 inhabitants. The name originates from "Sonnemare," referring to the water between the islands of Bommenede and Schouwen. "Sonne" stands for south and "Mare" means water. One of Zonnemaire’s most famous historical residents is Pieter Zeeman.

Cornelia van Zijp-Bijlo was a dedicated district nurse on Schouwen-Duiveland. With her motorcycle and little dog Robbie, she was always there for her patients, day and night. She was praised for her social compassion and received a royal decoration for her work.

Kerkwerve

Kerkwerve is a village on Schouwen-Duiveland with around 990 inhabitants. It originated around 1200 during the diking of Schouwen. The church is built on a mound, which explains the name. Until 1997, Kerkwerve was part of Middenschouwen and has a historic municipal coat of arms.

Slot Haamstede

Discover Slot Haamstede, the old castle in Haamstede surrounded by the Slotbos forest. Nature Conservation Society regularly organizes excursions in the surrounding forest. In the summer, you can watch slide shows in the castle's basement.

End of pearl route Nobelpoort

The Nobelpoort, one of the last three city gates of Zierikzee. The medieval gate dates back to the 14th century and is located inland.

De Zeelandbrug

The Zeeland Bridge is an imposing structure over five kilometers long, connecting Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland. The Zeeland Bridge was built to replace the ferry connection between Zierikzee and Kats. Since 2015, it has been a National Monument.

Beldert

De Beldert is a hamlet on Schouwen-Duiveland and the former harbor of Dreischor. Since the damming of the Dijkwater in 1954, it has lost its harbor function. Today, it is a peaceful place with historical value, located within the village limits of Dreischor.

Molen De Zwaan

Visit Molen De Zwaan, a black octagonal ground-sailer built in 1886 in Moriaanshoofd (Kerkwerve). This corn mill replaced an older post mill and is a valuable cultural heritage.

Nationaal Park Oosterschelde

Standbeeld Job Baster

In Zierikzee stands the statue of Job Baster. This Dutch pioneer was the first to successfully breed goldfish on Dutch soil. His ponds quickly spread throughout the country.

Molen Den Haas

Visit the historic Molen Den Haas, built in 1727, in Zierikzee. This round stone stelling mill has no less than three pairs of millstones and an impressive wingspan of 23.80 meters.

Grevelingendam

The Grevelingendam connects Schouwen-Duiveland with Goeree-Overflakkee. During the opening on April 1, 1965, a marriage was celebrated between a resident of Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee.

Dreischor

Dreischor is the most beautiful ring village on Schouwen-Duiveland, featuring a characteristic village square, historic farmhouses, and a charming, authentic atmosphere. A hidden gem full of history and tranquility.

Jacob Cats, born in Brouwershaven, was an influential 17th-century poet and statesman, known for his moralistic poems. His statue in Brouwershaven was recently restored, and a bronze replica was placed on the Markt to commemorate his legacy.
